Pick a width and a colour and the border shows up in the preview straight away. By default it goes outside the photo, so no pixel of the picture is covered: a 1200 × 800 image with the default 20 px border comes out at 1240 × 840. The same settings apply to every image in the list, up to 10 files of 50 MB each, and you can save them one at a time or as a single ZIP. The frame is drawn on a canvas inside your browser, so the photos are never uploaded.
Outside is the classic mat: the canvas grows by the border width on all four sides and the photo stays intact. Use it for prints and blog images.
Inside keeps the original dimensions and paints the border over the outer edge of the photo instead. Pick it when a slot demands an exact size, such as a 1080 × 1080 post, and the edges can spare a few pixels.
Square canvas centres the photo on a square whose side is the longer edge plus twice the border. A 1200 × 800 landscape with a 20 px border becomes 1240 × 1240, with 220 px of colour above and below the picture. That is how you post a whole landscape or portrait photo in a square feed without losing the sides, and it lines up product shots of different shapes in a square shop grid.
A border in px is exact. At 300 dpi, a quarter-inch white edge on a print is 75 px. A 1 or 2 px light grey line, on the other hand, is enough to stop a screenshot with a white background from blending into a white document or slide.
Percent is measured against the shorter side of each image, so a batch of mixed sizes gets borders that look the same. At 5 %, a 4000 × 3000 camera photo gets 150 px and a 1080 × 1080 phone picture gets 54 px; the settings panel shows the pixel value for the image you are previewing. The slider runs from 0 to 500 px or 0 to 50 %.
The swatches cover white, black, an off-white (#f4f1ea), a light grey (#e5e5e5) and charcoal (#333333). The picker or the hex field takes any other colour.
Same as original keeps a JPG as JPG, a PNG as PNG and a WebP as WebP; BMP files are saved as PNG. JPG and WebP are re-encoded at quality 92 by default (adjustable from 10 to 100). In our test a 1200 × 800 JPG of 224,092 bytes came out at 231,661 bytes with the default white 20 px border, and at 180,390 bytes as WebP. A PNG grows more: our 1,601,750-byte PNG test image became 2,101,033 bytes, because the browser’s PNG encoder compresses less tightly than the program that made the original.
Transparent areas of a PNG or WebP stay transparent; only the frame itself is coloured. Save as JPG and those areas take the border colour, since JPG has no transparency.
