What happens to your files

When you add an image, the page reads it into your browser's memory. The browser decodes it, applies your settings, encodes a new file and offers it as a download. None of these steps sends the file to a server.

Most of the work uses the browser's built-in canvas. AVIF encoding, HEIC decoding and PDF rendering need extra code libraries, which your browser downloads from this site the first time you use them and then runs locally.

What you can check yourself

No upload step: No server receives your images, so there is no upload wait and nothing to delete afterwards.
Watch the Network tab: Open your browser's developer tools (F12 on most desktop browsers), switch to Network and compress a file. No request carries your image.
Closing the tab clears them: Files and results exist only in the open tab. Close or reload it and they are gone.
No cookies of our own: Your theme and cookie choice are kept in local storage. Google Analytics and AdSense set cookies only after you click Accept in the cookie notice.

Trade-offs by format

JPG: Small files for photos, but no transparency: transparent areas turn white when you convert to JPG.
PNG: Lossless, so text and sharp edges stay clean. A photo saved as PNG is usually several times larger than the same photo as JPG.
WebP: Smaller than JPG at similar quality and keeps transparency. Some older programs and upload forms still refuse it.
AVIF: Often the smallest file at the same visual quality. Encoding is slower because it runs in a WebAssembly encoder instead of the browser's canvas.
GIF: Limited to 256 colours. Converting a GIF to PNG or JPG keeps only the first frame.
HEIC: The default photo format on iPhones. Most browsers other than Safari cannot display it, so the converter shows the converted result as the preview.
PDF: Each page becomes one image at about 144 dpi. Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened, so remove the password first.
