JPG to AVIF Converter

JPG’s block-based compression, designed in the early 1990s, has to make broad trade-offs that show up as blockiness and haloing once you push file size down. AVIF, built on the AV1 video codec’s more advanced prediction, can represent the same visual detail using substantially fewer bytes and handles smooth gradients with far less banding, since it works with much larger and more flexible prediction blocks.

On a typical photograph, a 3 MB JPG at quality 90 commonly converts to an AVIF of around 800 KB to 1.2 MB at a comparable visual quality — a saving in the range of 60–70% — with the two images difficult to tell apart at normal viewing size.

The main trade is encoding time: producing an AVIF takes noticeably longer than a JPG of the same image, since the format’s compression techniques are more computationally demanding. That barely matters here, since the conversion runs once in your browser rather than being generated on the fly for every page visitor, so the only cost is a slightly longer wait during conversion itself, not any ongoing performance penalty.

Support is the other consideration: while every current browser displays AVIF, some older software, a handful of design tools and a few content management systems still cannot open it directly, so keep the source JPG as a fallback if the image needs to be edited somewhere that doesn’t yet support AVIF.

AVIF supports up to 10-bit colour per channel against JPG’s fixed 8-bit, which mostly matters for smooth gradients — a sunset sky, a soft shadow, a subtle colour transition — where JPG can show visible banding at lower quality settings and AVIF renders the same transition smoothly. For most everyday photos this difference is subtle, but it becomes noticeable on exactly the kind of image that photographers and designers care most about getting right.
