AVIF to JPG Converter

When an AVIF needs to go somewhere less modern, you generally have two choices: JPG or PNG. For an ordinary photograph, JPG is almost always the better pick, since it produces a far smaller file than PNG would for the same image and is accepted by essentially every upload form, print service, and piece of photo software that has ever existed. PNG only earns its keep when the image needs transparency or you specifically require a lossless copy for repeated editing — neither of which applies to a typical photo.

AVIF achieves its very small file sizes using compression techniques more advanced than JPG’s, so converting to JPG generally increases the file size for the same visual quality — a 150 KB AVIF photo might become a 400–600 KB JPG at a quality setting that looks comparable. That is simply the cost of moving to a format JPG’s era of hardware and software could decode; it does not indicate the AVIF was somehow deficient.

The quality slider lets you manage that trade directly: a higher setting keeps detail closer to the AVIF source at a larger file size, while a lower one shrinks the JPG further at the cost of some visible compression.

Both AVIF and JPG are lossy formats, so converting between them stacks two rounds of compression rather than one — the AVIF has already discarded some detail, and re-encoding to JPG discards a little more. In practice this is rarely visible at a reasonably high JPG quality setting, since AVIF’s losses are usually well hidden to begin with, but pushing the JPG quality very low on top of an already-compressed AVIF is where artefacts start to compound and show up as visible blockiness.

The AVIF is decoded and written out as JPG entirely on your device, so a photo destined for an official form or an unfamiliar print service is not handed to a third-party server along the way.
