AVIF to PNG Converter

AVIF only became a practical web format around 2020, built on the AV1 video codec, and while every current browser displays it, software adoption elsewhere has lagged well behind. A lot of desktop image editors, older operating system image viewers, and specialised tools used in print or document workflows were built before AVIF existed and simply have no decoder for it, so the file either fails to open or shows a broken-image icon.

PNG carries none of that risk — it has been supported by essentially every piece of image software for over twenty-five years, which makes it the safe target when an AVIF needs to go somewhere other than a modern browser.

This decodes the AVIF to the pixels your browser already renders it as, then writes those pixels into a PNG without any further compression loss — so what you get is an exact, editable copy of the image as it currently looks, not a restoration of anything the AVIF’s own encoding may have already discarded. If the source AVIF was saved with lossy compression, that loss is already baked into the pixels; PNG simply stops any further loss from happening.

This is also the right move before editing an AVIF in a tool that cannot open it directly, since PNG opens in virtually every editor and preserves whatever quality the AVIF currently holds without adding artefacts of its own.

AVIF is one of the most space-efficient formats available, so converting to PNG typically produces a substantially larger file — often three to six times bigger for a photographic image, since PNG’s lossless compression cannot match AVIF’s specialised prediction techniques. A 200 KB AVIF photo commonly becomes a 700 KB to 1.2 MB PNG. That increase is simply the cost of universal, lossless compatibility, not a sign anything went wrong.

The AVIF is decoded and the PNG assembled entirely in your browser, so an image is never sent to a server purely to change its format.
