PNG to AVIF Converter

The gap between PNG and AVIF is large because they solve different problems: PNG is a general lossless format, while AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec’s prediction techniques, designed specifically to represent photographic and complex imagery in very few bytes. For a typical photographic PNG, lossy AVIF at a reasonable quality setting commonly produces a file 80–90% smaller — a 10 MB PNG screenshot might become a 1–1.5 MB AVIF with no obvious difference at normal viewing size.

For flat-coloured graphics with few distinct colours, the gap narrows, since PNG already compresses that kind of content efficiently — AVIF still tends to win, but not by as dramatic a margin as it does on a photo.

Like WEBP, AVIF supports both lossy and lossless modes. Lossless AVIF reproduces the PNG’s pixels exactly and is typically smaller than the PNG for the same content, though it will not match lossy AVIF’s dramatic size reduction. It is the right choice for a logo, icon or diagram where every pixel matters and you still want some size saving over PNG; lossy AVIF is the better fit for photographic content, screenshots or anything where a barely perceptible quality trade-off is an easy win for a much smaller file.

AVIF carries a full alpha channel in both lossy and lossless mode, so a transparent PNG logo or icon keeps its see-through background exactly after conversion — a capability JPG never had. Browser support is now broad: Chrome, Firefox and Edge have supported AVIF for several years, and Safari added support from version 16 onward, so the great majority of visitors to a website will see it correctly.

The remaining gap sits in older software: some desktop image viewers, a number of design tools without a dedicated plugin, and certain content management systems still cannot open AVIF directly, so keep the source PNG on hand if the file needs to travel outside a modern browser.
