A favicon is the little icon shown in browser tabs and bookmarks, and it needs to be an ICO file with several sizes packed inside. This builds one from your image — 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256-pixel versions — entirely in your browser.

How to convert PNG to ICO

Frequently asked questions

What sizes are included in the .ico?
Six square sizes (16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px) are packed into a single ICO, so browsers and Windows can pick the right one for each context.
My image isn’t square — will it be stretched?
No. Non-square images are centred and scaled to fit inside each square with transparent padding, so nothing is distorted. For the crispest favicon, start from a square image.
Where do I put the favicon?
Save it as favicon.ico in your site’s root, or reference it with a <link rel="icon"> tag. Most browsers also pick up a root /favicon.ico automatically.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The whole conversion runs in your browser using your device's own processor. Your files are never sent anywhere.
