A PNG is a fixed grid of pixels, so enlarging a logo or icon saved as PNG eventually shows visible blur or blocky edges. Tracing it to SVG produces a vector description — shapes and paths instead of pixels — that stays sharp at any size, from a favicon to a building-sized banner. This traces your PNG to SVG in the browser; it works best on clean, flat-coloured graphics rather than photographs.

What vector tracing actually does

The conversion does not simply wrap the PNG in an SVG container — it analyses the image, finds areas of similar colour, and describes their outlines as mathematical paths. A crisp two-colour icon might trace into a dozen clean shapes; a gradient-heavy illustration can produce hundreds, since each colour band becomes its own path.

That is why the source image matters more here than in most conversions. A logo exported at 512×512 with three or four flat colours traces into a tidy SVG, often under 10 KB, that scales to any size without a single blurred edge. The same process applied to a 300 KB photograph produces an SVG that can run into hundreds of kilobytes of path data while still looking like a posterised, blocky approximation of the original.

Why photographs trace badly and graphics trace well

SVG tracing was built for the world of logos, icons and line art, where an image is really a small number of solid colours with clean boundaries — exactly what a path-based format can describe efficiently. A photograph is the opposite: continuous gradients of millions of colours with no hard edges to trace, so the algorithm has to approximate it with a limited palette of shapes, which is what produces the posterised, cartoon-like look photographs get after tracing.

If the source PNG already has soft anti-aliased edges — common in screenshots and rendered graphics — those get simplified into cleaner but less exact outlines. For a logo this usually looks fine or even crisper; for detailed artwork it can visibly change the shape of fine details.

When the resulting file is genuinely smaller

For the graphics SVG is suited to, the size win is real and large: a simple flat-colour icon that is 15 KB as PNG can trace down to 2–3 KB as SVG, because a handful of path commands replaces a full pixel grid. That matters for a website icon set that loads on every page, where shaving kilobytes off dozens of small images adds up.

For anything photographic, tracing is the wrong tool for file size — a PNG or JPG will always be smaller and more accurate for a photograph than a traced SVG trying to approximate it with shapes.

Processed locally, and easy to re-edit afterwards

The tracing runs entirely in your browser, so a logo or design asset never leaves your device before you have decided whether the result is good enough to use. Because the output is a real SVG, you also get something a PNG never gives you: an editable file, with paths you can open in a vector editor and adjust colour by colour rather than pixel by pixel.

Will my photo convert into a clean SVG?
Tracing suits logos, icons and flat artwork with a small number of solid colours. Photographs get posterised into blocky colour regions during tracing, which is rarely what you want — for a photo, keep it as PNG or JPG instead.
Why does the SVG look simplified compared to the PNG?
Vector tracing approximates the image using a limited palette of shapes rather than reproducing every pixel, so soft gradients and anti-aliased edges get smoothed into flatter regions. Simple, high-contrast graphics trace closely to the original; detailed or noisy images lose more fidelity.
How much smaller will the SVG be?
For a simple flat-colour icon, often five to ten times smaller than the PNG, since a few path commands replace a full pixel grid. For a complex or photographic image the SVG can end up larger than the PNG, because tracing has to describe many small shapes instead of one compact image.
Can I edit the SVG afterwards?
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to trace in the first place. Open the SVG in a vector editor and each traced shape is a separate, selectable path with its own fill colour, which you can recolour or reshape without touching pixels.
Is my logo uploaded anywhere during tracing?
