PNG keeps every pixel exact, which suits logos and screenshots but produces bigger files than a website really needs. WEBP compresses those same images far more tightly while keeping full transparency, so a page carrying dozens of graphics loads in a fraction of the time. This converts your PNG to WEBP in the browser, with a quality slider to set the trade-off.
PNG uses a general-purpose compression scheme (DEFLATE, the same family as a .zip file) that has no idea it is looking at a photo or an icon — it just squeezes repeated bytes. WEBP builds on prediction methods borrowed from video codecs, so it models how neighbouring pixels relate to each other before compressing, and that produces meaningfully smaller files for the same image.
The difference shows up fastest on real pages: a 1200×800 product screenshot exported as PNG often lands around 420 KB; the same image saved as lossless WEBP comes down to roughly 300 KB, and as lossy WEBP at quality 80 it drops to 60–90 KB with no visible change at normal viewing size. Multiply that across a page with twenty such images and the saving is the difference between a page that loads instantly and one a visitor waits on.
WEBP is unusual in offering both modes from one format. Lossless WEBP re-creates the PNG’s pixels exactly, typically 25–35% smaller than the PNG for the same content, and is the right choice for a logo, an icon or any image where a single wrong pixel would matter. Lossy WEBP works more like JPG: it throws away detail the eye barely notices in exchange for a much smaller file, and at quality 75–85 a photographic screenshot is usually indistinguishable from the original while running a fifth of the size.

Alpha transparency carries over cleanly: a PNG logo with a see-through background stays exactly as see-through in the WEBP, in both lossless and lossy mode, which is not true of JPG. Browser support has also stopped being a real concern — every current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge renders WEBP natively, and has for several years.
The remaining gap sits outside the browser: some older desktop image viewers, a handful of design tools without a plugin, and a few upload forms still expect PNG or JPG specifically. If your WEBP is destined for a website, that gap rarely matters; if it needs to open in an older program, keep the PNG as your working file and export WEBP only for the pages that will serve it.
The PNG is decoded and re-encoded to WEBP locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and no copy is stored once you leave the page.
